We were friends first on LJ way back when, and I'm trying to remember exactly when/where we first met in person - I know we certainly met f2f in 2010 during my Baltimore/Philadelphia trip but I think there had been encounter/s before that.
It was probably a MiniCon, back in the late 1980s, but it may have been a WindyCon in the same time frame. Jon is/was a favorite person with the university SF club. DH knows Jon better than I do.
My knowledge of him centers on my time as a Minicon regular in the early 80s, as well as taking part in the RASFF online user group where he was mentioned often and where he occasionally showed up. He's an amazing polymath.
The first time I met Jo Walton, she asked me "Do you know Jon Singer?"
As a western Canadian, I don't know the old MIT crowd. I used to lurk on Making Light a lot around the turn of the century. I saw Jon's name come up in the comments. Gamelans! Lasers! Pottery!
It was a pleasure to meet and talk with him at Scintillation in Montreal.
Hi, I see you subscribed to me... I totally know Jon, yes! He's local to me, and though I haven't seen him in a while, I have many fond memories of our past interactions, especially (no surprise) ones involving food.

Him, or Bill Higgins.
(I know both. I think I've known Jon longer than Bill, but not by much. I do see Bill more often, though.)

Tho' I do think it's kind of dependant upon whether you know the old MIT crowd.
